Durban kicks off the first National Series of the Red Bull Pump Track World Championship, Africa style

On 14 July, Go!Durban Cycling Academy hosted the first of the two South African pre-qualifiers qualifiers in the friendly, port-city capital of Kwa Zulu Natal. The sub-tropical climate of the east coast served up the sunshine and fair weather as riders converged at KwaDabeka Bike Park to battle it out for their spot in the Super Final in Pretoria.

Based in the township of KwaDabeka on the outskirts of Durban, the 165m long Velosolutions Pump Track is set in a picturesque location and designed specifically for electrifying head to head races. And South Africa did just that, bringing close competition to the table along with much faster times than we saw in 2018.

BMX reigned supreme in the male category, with French rider Adrien Broustal staying on top the whole day without being beaten. He took first place in the men’s category, with Connor Terblance coming in a close second. However the man of the hour undoubtedly was Chris Hearn, who placed in 4th regardless of his recent amputated ankle – this truly was a great human feat, leaving the audience and fellow riders in awe.

In the women’s category, BMX rider Georgina Grassie took the first step in defending her title by taking first place, lining up for the chance to secure her spot in the World Final again this year. Riders from Velosolutions Izimbali finished in 4th and 5th place respectively and the entire team will be making the trip to the Super Final.

The riders travelling to the Super Final from Durban are:

Male category

Adrien Broustal

Connor Terblanche

Mvelo Ntombela

Chris Hearn

Female category

Georgina Grassie

Hannah Stiebel

Beani Thies

Nomfundo Mtshali

This weekend the Red Bull Pump Track World Championship arrives in Pretoria. Fondly referred to as the “Jacaranda City,” it will play host to a second qualifier as well as the first Super Final of the series. 20 July will see the ultimate showdown as riders from the coast and the highveld battle it out for the chance to compete at the coveted World Final.
